Global Steel Output Dipped For the First Time in 2021

The world crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totalled 156.8 million tonnes (Mt) in the month of August this year, down by 1.4% compared to the same month a year before. The output registered decline for the first time in 2021.


The largest steel producing region was the Asia and Oceania, whose output totalled 112.7 Mt in August this year. The second largest producer was the EU-27 region, with an output of 11.6 Mt. In third place was North America, which recorded an output of 10.2 Mt. The output (in Mt) by the other regions is as follows: Africa (1.3), CIS (8.8), Other Europe (4.5), Middle East (3.6) and South America (4.0).

All regions except Asia and Oceania recorded year-on-year surge in crude steel output. The African output surged the most, rising by 38.2% from the prior year month. The North American and the EU-27 regions recorded surge in output by 24.4% and 27.1% respectively. The South American region’s production soared by almost 17.2%. Other Europe too saw modest jump in output by 11.7%. The CIS region saw its output increase by 3.6% over the previous year. The Middle East production recorded 10.9% surge. On the contrary, the Asia and Oceania region recorded year-on-year decline in output by 7.3%.

The topmost steel producing country was China, with an output of 83.2 Mt in August this year. The other key producers were India (9.9 Mt) and Japan (7.9 Mt).
